Fine & Performing Arts
In addition to the fine & performing arts curriculum woven into our regular school day and extended day programs, South Loop Elementary School offers many opportunities for your child to explore his or her creative side. Activities are available in several different areas: Music, Dance, Drama, and Media & Visual Arts.
South Loop Band

The South Loop Band is part of the regular school day and available to all students in grades 4th - 8th. The school band will participate in city-wide competitions. Instruments are provided subject to availability, and parents can rent instruments if necessary. There is a mandatory $50 band fee for students who use a school instrument, and a mandatory $25 band fee for students who rent an instrument. Chicago Children's Choir

Through a partnership with the Chicago Children's Choir, South Loop Elementary School has an in-school program that provides our school with a qualified conductor to establish a choir of 20-50 students. Students receive classroom training in basic music theory and choral performance from professional music educators. By developing musical skills and performing in public (citywide performances with other members of CCC), the children acquire poise, increased self-esteem and an understanding that discipline and hard work bring rewards. Through our school partnership with the Chicago Center School of Music, we offer in-school fee-based violin lessons during the Extended Day Program. Details will be coming soon on Fall enrollment.
Private Vocal Lessons

Is your child planning to be the next "American Idol"? Help him/her get a start with private vocal lessons. Our general music teacher, Ms. Anders is offering fee-based 30-minute private voice lessons afterschool Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Spaces are limited and will fill quickly, so enroll early. Participation requires a quarterly commitment! Private and group piano lessons are available Monday - Friday during the Extended Day Program at the Main Building with Mr. Conner Hollingsworth and Ms. Stephanie Carroll. Hip-Hop Dance Classes

Lookingglass Theater Program

Our Extended Day Program provides many free opportunities for your child to participate in drama activities. However, if your little diva requires more, then this program made available through a partnership with Lookingglass Theater is for you. This 10 week session will provide an opportunity for students to produce their own informal show. Students will learn to work collaboratively, develop drama skills, play theater games and much more. Spaces are limited.
Fall Session: Fridays from 3:35-5:00. September 13th-November 22nd. Class will not be held on November 1st.
Cost: $105 per student. Payment must be received before the first day of class.

Media & Visual Arts
Hyde Park Arts Class

Sign your K-4 student up for art classes taught by an artist from the Hyde Park Arts Center! In this 10 week course, students will make a variety of projects and learn different techniques including: paper mache masks, wire sculptures, print making techniques, simple sewing, and MUCH MORE! Origami Art Class

Did you know that the act of folding origami helps develop the brain? To create origami, you must use both hands simultaneously, which helps the electrons flow through both the left and right hemisphere of the brain. This brain function is scientifically proven to help repair damaged cell structures and is considered amazing exercise for those looking for effective art therapy.
Mr. Sherwin, owner of Sherwin’s Gallery (www.sherwinsgallery.com)and Field Museum artist, will be teaching an engaging 10 week Origami class for 1st-8th grade students at South Loop! Their hard work will be displayed at the end of their session in an art show.
Join Mr. Sherwin as he shows you how to make the legendary ‘paper crane’ and other origami shapes, such as flowers, bugs and other animals and so on. It’s for paper folders of all levels!
