Girls on the Run - 482

Athletics provide additional opportunities for students to build teamwork, make friends and challenge themselves. The school offers the following after-school sports and special events:

Basketball
Fee Based Grades 5th - 8th Enrollment: November  

South Loop Elementary School has competitive basketball teams in the following categories: Girls 5th-6th grade, Girls 7th-8th grade, Boys 5th-6th grade, Boys 7th-8th grade. Attendance at team practice and competitions is required. There is a $40 athletic fee for participation. 

Cheerleading Club
Fee Based Grades 1st - 4th, Girls Enrollment: October  

Girls in grades 1st through 4th can sign up for a recreational cheerleading club. The club will help to build cheerleading fundamentals. There is a $40 athletic fee for participation.  Email Ms. Knox for more information.

Cheerleading Competition Team
Fee Based Grades 5th - 8th, Girls Enrollment: October  

Girls in grades 5th through 8th can sign up for competitive cheerleading. Attendance at team practices and competitions is required. There is a $40 athletic fee for participation. Email Ms. Knox for more information.

 Mission Propelle Yoga

Who: 2nd-5th. Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. A waitlist will be created once the maximum amount of students has been reached. If a minimum amount of students is not reached, the class will be cancelled.

When: Wednesdays from 3:35-4:35. Wednesday, September 14-Wednesday, December 14 (no class 11/9, 11/23)                

All students not enrolled in the Extended Day Program must be picked up promptly at the conclusion of each session.

Number of Classes: 12

Where: Main Building (1212 S. Plymouth Court)

Price: $200. Fees are due at the time of registration and can be paid online at https://www.youth-guidance.org/afterschool/. Anyone with an outstanding balance with Youth Guidance will not be able to participate and their spot may be forfeited until their balance is resolved. More Info:Class Snapshot: 3 empowering experiences per session. 1) Yoga fosters self-esteem and body confidence while increasing mental and physical health. 2) Storytime featuring original girl-power storybooks supports literacy and social-emotional wellness while providing examples of strong female leaders. 3) Mentoring helps girls internalize and embody the character traits emphasized during storytime. Storybooks, activities, and e-news letters sent home weekly. 

Taekwondo

More Info: Students learn the basics of striking and movement through drills and games that also teach respect, discipline and self-control. Instruction also includes the history and culture of Tae Kwon Do.

More Info: Children will be engaged in a creative, fun, and safe yoga practice where all systems of the body, including nervous, endocrine, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, muscular/skeletal are toned and strengthened.  All students will learn the classic Hatha Poses, partner poses, yoga games, breath awareness, relaxation, and meditation practices that will improve their mental, physical, and emotional health.  The 5-7 year olds will learn yoga through a playful class that will be inspired by animals, nature, and stories.  The 8-13 year olds will learn practices that facilitate development and awareness that will help manage their youthful energy, build self-confidence, and improve coordination.  

Founder, Maria Macnab, has been practicing Yoga since 2004 and teaching Yoga to children for 3 years within the South Loop School & neighborhood.  Maria is the Director of Early Childhood Programs at South Loop School Elementary.  She is a certified Yoga teacher for Adults & Children, holding a 200-hour adult Yoga certification from Tejas Yoga Studio, a 95 hour Children’s Specialty Certification & 50-hour Therapeutic Certification from Global Family Yoga.  Maria holds her Master’s Degree and type 04 teaching certification in Early Childhood Education from Erikson Institute.  Maria combines her knowledge of child development and the science of Yoga to create inclusive classes for all children.  Let’s unite to keep children healthy, happy, and stress free! 

Co-Ed Youth Basketball
Fee Based Grades 1st - 5th Enrollment: October  pdfRegistration Form

This co-ed program is open to grades 1st through 5th plus non-attending students. The program is designed to teach youngsters the fundamentals of basketball, with an emphasis on skill development and teamwork. Drills and practices will be held in October and November. Players will be placed on teams in December to compete in a recreational league running until February 11th, 2012. Practices/games will be held on Saturdays  9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Cross Country Team
Fee Based Grades 5th - 8th Enrollment: Fall   

Cross Country Team is a competitive program for both boys and girls in grades 5th through 8th. Attendance at team practice and competitions is required. There is a $40 athletic fee for participation.

Fitness Night
Free Grades PreK - 8th Date: April   

This event, sponsored by the Family Involvement Group provides an opportunity for families to come together to learn about health and fitness, while having a good time and getting to know other South Loop Families. 

Girls on the Run
Free Grades 3rd - 5th Enrollment: February  

This national program weaves training for a 5K run with fun, experience-based lessons that improve self-awareness and inspire confidence in girls. 

Jump Rope for Heart
Free Grades 1st - 8th Date: TBD  

Jump Rope For Heart is a national education and fundraising event sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). It engages elementary and middle school students with jumping rope while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues. Students are encouraged to gather pledges to help raise money. 

Sheridan Park Softball

A softball league for girls in grades 1st through 8th. Sheridan Park softball has three levels of competition: 1st-2nd (Level 1), 3rd-5th (Level 2), and 6th-8th (Level 3). Soccer Camp

Introducing SOCCER exclusively to all S. Loop School students from your local near south soccer club, the Chi-Town Sharks. Offering up to 2 fun-filled week-long camps with emphasis on encouraging youth soccer participation and educational training for improving their soccer skill-set. Taught by the SHARKS professional coaching team.

Available to all students from 1st to 8th grade. Players are assigned into groups according to their grade. Each day will focus on one main soccer skill, such as control, dribbling, shooting or passing and concluded with world cup scrimmaging at the end of the week.

Track

Track is a competitive program for both boys and girls in grades 5th through 8th. Attendance at team practice and competitions is required. There is a $40 athletic fee for participation. 

Volleyball

Youth Wrestling Club

This 8-week program will teach the fundamentals of wrestling and is open to grades K - 8th plus non-attending students.
