Program Descriptions

Neighborhood School

South Loop School is a dynamic diverse neighborhood school located in the heart of Dearborn Park. We are a community school of choice for families and students. With an involved Local School Council, active parent involvement and a committed staff who love teaching, we prepare our students for interaction in a global society.

Regional Gifted Center

This program provides an accelerated instruction program in core content areas and includes a world language, computer science, laboratory science and fine arts. An enriched curriculum allows for skill development appropriate for student abilities and interests. Student enrollment is based on testing eligibilities. The annual GEAP application cycle begins in October and runs through December.

Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster

This program helps the school form partnerships with various arts and cultural organizations in Chicago. Our students receive instruction in at least three of the fine art disciplines: visual arts, music, dance, or drama.

Exposure to different arts programming helps students develop a life-long appreciation of the arts. Enrollment-by-lottery for this program is obtained by submitting an Option for Knowledge application during the months of October to December.

Community School

This tuition-based extended-day program operates daily until 6:00 PM. The program provides additional academic support for students’ learning, fine arts, drama, clubs, physical education, dance, and all-around character development. This program is available to students enrolled in South Loop School as well as neighborhood families whose children attend school elsewhere.

Early Learning Center - Tuition-Based Preschool Program

This program provides 3, 4 and 5-year olds with the necessary foundation to succeed in reading and math, and encourage a love of lifelong learning. The center encourages independent learning and promotes cognitive development. The teachers and staff facilitate learning by providing the children with concrete learning experiences. Any child in grades kindergarten through 8th is welcome to enroll if they reside within the service boundaries of the school.

South Shore Fine Arts Academy (SSFAA) is a new Performance School opening in September of 2009 that will initially serve students in grades pre-K - 2 in a location to be determined in the South Shore Community. Established through the Chicago Public Schools' Renaissance 2010 Initiative and the Renaissance Schools Fund Performance Pipeline Program, SSFAA will build on South Loop School's proven model for improving student outcomes.
